Carney’s coming

Ralph_Carney_mosaic

Even if you’ve never heard of Ralph Carney, you’ve probably heard him. On records by Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Les Claypool, the B-52sThey Might Be Giants, Tin Huey (the new wave band he co-founded), even the late great Allen Ginsberg, among many others. It’s always been hard to pigeonhole Ralph, but now this longtime rock/jazz/blues/bluegrass/experimental multi-instrumentalist has pigeonholed himself, at least for the moment, with Ralph Carney’s Serious Jass Project. Which is actually some serious-ass players playing for serious fun, and perfect for Jazz from the Tip. This is no-holds-barred, horn-based jazz with echoes of New Orleans, Kansas City, Duke Ellington, the 1930s and the 1950s – impossible to fully pin down, and all the more joyful for it. Tom Waits may have summed up this esteemed musician best: “Ralph’s great… He’s guided by some other source of information. He’s like a broken toy that works better than before it was broken.”
